Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions about cocoa
Ceremonial cacao has been used as food and as natural medicine in ceremonies for many thousands of years. The use of cacao for ceremonies has been dated back to 2000 BC. In the 60s, however, it was not included in the worldwide resurgence of plant medicine, as it does not have a psychedelic effect like other plants (e.g. Ayahuasca, San Pedro, etc.). Ceremonial cacao has the effect of facilitating your own inner journey instead of taking you on its own.
If you want to read more about the difference, you can read the blog post:
"What is the difference between regular cacao and ceremonial cacao?"
Regular cocoa powder is processed – often beyond recognition.
Even if the cacao is raw, it is still slightly processed, which means it loses some of the nutrients and energetic properties that ceremonial cacao is known for.
However, the greater or lesser separation from the natural fat and fiber in cocoa powder also means that it can be more stimulating for the nervous system and liver – just like coffee.
Therefore, ceremonial cacao does not provide the same high kick and subsequent low that powder or chocolate can give. Ceremonial cacao is made as a paste.
Ceremonial cacao is thus the purest form of cacao you can consume and therefore also the healthiest. It is raw cacao beans made from the Criollo variety. This variety of cacao beans is the rarest because it is the most difficult to cultivate and therefore also the most expensive variety.
The expensive Criollo cacao beans are harvested, fermented, and sun-dried.
The ceremonial cacao you can order from me is sun-dried instead of roasted. Therefore, you can be sure that the cacao from me is of high quality, because sun-drying the beans preserves more of the cacao's nutrients and energetic properties.
The cocoa you buy from Camilles Cacao Love is pure and made from raw, criollo cocoa beans - ceremonial grade cacao.
Camilles Cacao Love comes from the Ucayali region in Peru, located approximately 600 km east of Lima in the Andes Mountains rainforest.
The cooperative itself is located in the small town of Atalaya, which lies by the long River Tambo, where many indigenous tribes with limited contact with civilization reside.
Criollo beans are used as they are considered to be the original variety for ceremonial grade cacao.
The cooperative consists of 155 plantations in Ucayali, centered in Atalaya (dated 2023)
It is both regular cocoa farmers and indigenous tribes, spanning generations, who supply cocoa for your ceremonial cocoa moments <3
Even though cacao is a wonderful superfood, there are still certain precautions you should take if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- are taking antidepressant medication
- have high or low blood pressure
You can certainly drink your ceremonial cacao when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. However, you should always drink half the dose. Half a dose is approximately 10-20 grams.
Some types of psychopharmaceuticals do not go hand in hand with ceremonial cacao due to its content of tryptophan and MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors).
To be safe, ask your doctor if there are any contraindications regarding the type of psychopharmaceutical you are taking.
If you have heart problems, you should be aware that ceremonial cacao increases heart rate, opens blood vessels, and reduces blood pressure. So be careful if you have either high or low blood pressure.
Contraindications are rare. If there are any, use half a dose of 15-20 grams when drinking your ceremonial cacao.
If in doubt, always consult your doctor.
I have created a nice step-by-step guide, which you can find here.
The amount of cacao an individual needs varies greatly.
I recommend between 25-35 grams per cup. Feel free to start with 25 grams of ceremonial cacao and see how it feels to drink this amount.
The best dosage varies depending on your intention for your cup of cacao.
If you are very receptive to energies and have a sensitive nervous system, a lower dose will be best for you.
You can read more about cacao dosage - especially based on your intention - on the blog here:
I myself use lucuma powder, maca powder, cardamom, and true Ceylon cinnamon. All organic. For your convenience, I have gathered all these wonderful spices in my product, Original Spice Mix, which you can purchase along with your cacao here.
Additionally, I often spice it up with chili powder or cayenne pepper, as it increases the absorption of the cacao. Vanilla powder is also super delicious to add to your cacao, which you can easily buy here. You can add all the spices you find delicious. Experiment!
Lucuma Powder
Contains antioxidants, B-vitamins, fiber, and stabilizes blood sugar and appetite. Provides a delicious caramel-like flavor.
Maca Powder
High content of vitamin C, fiber, iron. Increases fertility, stimulates sexual energy, and stabilizes your hormone balance.
Ceylon Cinnamon
The true cinnamon from Sri Lanka, which stabilizes blood sugar (therefore fantastic if you drink cocoa on an empty stomach in the morning), antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and good for your blood pressure.
Cardamom
Good for digestion like cocoa (detoxifying) - for diarrhea, constipation, etc., good for bad breath, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory.
My "Original Spice Mix" is a vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free, and organic superfood blend for your high vibe cacao. It can be purchased together with your cacao here.
You can easily use regular tap water. I personally use rice milk because I like the taste. Other types of plant-based milk can also be used, but I don't recommend almond milk as it inhibits the absorption of cocoa due to its naturally high calcium content.
Drinking ceremonial cacao can be a very different experience for everyone. However, most people can describe one or more of the following experiences:
- Increased energy (without the jittery feeling you can get from caffeine!)
- Increased focus (and for a longer period)
- Creativity
- Improved blood circulation and digestion
- A good assistant for meditation and inner work
- Palpitations (heart-opening)
- Increased connection to oneself, others, nature, or other energy
- Increased libido (!)
Cacao is a wonderful support for many things and has been for thousands of years for ancient civilizations; the Aztecs, Mayans, Incas, and Olmecs.
It offers both physiological as well as emotional and spiritual properties.
Therefore, cacao is a wonderful support for:
- Meditation
- Yoga or other mindful movement
- Journaling
- Inner work with yourself in therapeutic contexts
- Study, book writing, or other creative ideas
- Tarot readings, Oracle Cards, or other spiritual practices
- Working with your sexuality, connection to body and soul
- Connecting to femininity/feminine energies (not gender-specific, but the energy, as cacao spirit is a feminine spirit - hence also the pronoun "Ix" in "Ixcacao", which is a feminine pronoun)
Often, many will include cacao in their ceremonies and rituals, as the cacao spirit accompanies them on the journey into their inner landscape.
Cacao is not psychedelic and does not force you on a journey, but assists you wherever you wish to go.
So allow yourself to be guided in a loving embrace, with the opportunity to see what you most need, be reminded of, and relearn

It's flower pollen!! Besides being beautiful and tasting really good, it's also an aphrodisiac - you know, "get in the mood" kind of food!
It gives a sweet honey taste to the cacao when you use it as a topping AND it's also rich in several vitamins, amino acids, and protein. You can buy flower pollen (200g) as an add-on here when you order your cacao. There's enough for about 35 cups of cacao for DKK 130.
Just as it's perfectly fine for children to eat chocolate, you are more than welcome to enjoy ceremonial cacao with them 🤎
But what about the dosage?
It should be lower than when you prepare cacao for yourself.
As an adult, a dose between 15-40g is recommended.
This depends on how sensitive you are and what your intention is for your cacao.
But remember that children are even more sensitive and open. Especially the younger they are, which is why they should have a smaller dose and quantity.
For very young children, I would simply let them taste from your own cup.
Perhaps make a little extra for them - give it to them in a cup - possibly with extra liquid.
Often, our children are good at sensing what they need and losing interest when they've had enough.
My recommendation is:
• If they show interest themselves, by all means let them taste - only with natural interest, as a lack of interest might be a sign that it's not for them (even if you know all the wonderful properties of cacao and would love to give them to your child ;))
• If you want to make ceremonial cacao instead of regular chocolate milk, it's wonderful to be able to share it with them.
After all, there is more nutritional value, both physiologically and energetically, in a cup of ceremonial grade cacao.
And how beautiful is it to be able to share this moment with your child?

Your support when purchasing Camille's Cacao Love
A portion of your cocoa purchase goes to the organization: Survival International when you order from the shop 🤎
I have long supported this organization, but due to their rules regarding communication when sharing their logo, I have now simply wanted to make it easy and tell you.
Survival International receives my support because it means a lot to me that indigenous tribes are allowed to choose for themselves.
Such as, among others, the Ashaninka tribe, which is a large part of the cooperative in Atalaya and contributes a lot of cocoa beans to your ceremonial grade cacao from me.
It should be emphasized that they do not support directly, but due to where the cacao originates from, it has awakened my heart to how important it is to preserve indigenous tribes' land around the world, so that they are not ostracized, killed, and forced to flee due to modern society's overexploitation of resources and territories to conquer.
The freest people must be those who are outside society, provided they thrive.
Because not all indigenous tribes want contact - and that should be respected 🤎
Recently, there has been unrest in Peru due to a new president. And the government has come up with a bill to clear some land for oil and gas drilling - which will mean that indigenous tribes, who have no contact with civilization, will lose their land.
(Write if you want a link to sign the petition. It is still needed!)
This is some of what Survival International has been working on since 1969.
For every large bag of Camille's Cacao Love I sell, as of May 1, 2023, I have chosen to support Eden: People + Planet, which plants trees around the world, including Madagascar, Kenya, Nepal, Honduras, Brazil, and more.
Cacao is a wonderful gift from the earth to us humans who hear her call - therefore it is important for me to be able to give back to the earth to show gratitude.
This organization has high transparency, which is important, as it is also part of my values.
So, 80% of the donation goes to administration, seeds for planting are often purchased locally, and the trees are primarily owned by the locals, who are also involved in planting them, thus ensuring them an income.
You can read more about Eden: People + Planet on their website, where they also have a helpful FAQ for the most common questions:
