Mama Cacao – the mother, the nurturer

Mama Cacao – the mother, the nurturer

Mama Cacao. The mother. The nurturer. The archetype or guardian, elder, a part of cacao intelligence, is often mentioned. Many feel that cacao is a woman, which is also reflected in the Mayan prefix when she is referred to as Ixcacao. This aspect of cacao also feels immensely feminine to me.

Many will encounter Mama Cacao and feel her all-encompassing embrace. A deep, unconditional, and endless love that she gives from her pure being. She awakens your heart's intelligence and consciousness simply by being. You will often recognize Mama Cacao – through tears, connectedness, love, and the ability to experience the world from a deep sense of being. From the heart's endless connection to the cacao collective and your origin in your universal home.

The maternal nourishment

Mama Cacao is the cacao guardian, elder, who awakens the heart and provides deep nourishment – like the nourishment you received from your mother through her breast. The full-fat milk, the sweetness, and all the nourishment given to you before it was redistributed to your own mother.

Meeting Mama Cacao is an awakening of this. For some, it is an experience of something they have never had if their earthly mother was unable to provide it for various reasons.

I feel inclined to say "she" when I speak of Mama Cacao, for she is the feminine. And it feels so right to let my words find the proper form to describe the feeling.

A universal mother

She is your universal mother, who can give you the feeling of that missing relationship. We all need to feel that we have a mother who takes care of us. A place to go when the world seems overwhelming – for a while or longer. Perhaps not a mother in physical form, but the maternal care that Mama Cacao provides, and into which we can lean.

For that is what you can do: lean into Mama Cacao. Allow yourself to let the world stand still for a moment. Pause all movement and take a seat in her embrace. The embrace, the cave – like a winter den that is always accessible if you remember to use it.

The feminine aspect

She is not only the connection to your mother and the maternal. She is the feeling of the feminine that can be awakened within you – completely outside the traditional understanding of the feminine as something belonging to a woman. No, it is the feminine aspect of energy that we all possess. The sensing part of the energy that explores.

She is also our helper, our companion in connecting with our female lineage. The women who came before you and shaped you. The women who come after you, and whom you help shape simply by being yourself. A lineage that extends beyond the biological and is formed by the collective feminine.

Mama Cacao and the Transformer

Mama Cacao works beautifully hand in hand with all cacao guardians, but especially with the transformer, the shapeshifter. Perhaps this guardian feels more masculine, and in their energy, they harmonize like yin and yang. Their journey in earthly bodies creates transformation when something unlocks in the heart. The sensory awareness makes it possible to feel what is at stake.

Personally, I have felt a wonderful fusion between the two. The transformer has probably been the one I sensed the most because I needed it the most. Years ago, my life was difficult. Not necessarily seen through the eyes of that time, but in today's light – escaping from myself was the hardest part. Spending so much energy on being within myself was exhausting, especially when everything outwardly seemed fine. And it can be difficult to know that something is off when it has accumulated over time... maybe it has always been that way?

Mama Cacao and the mother's nourishment

The maternal care Mama Cacao represents led me to develop the Nourished Mother ceremony. I didn't have cacao in my life when I gave birth to my son in 2014, but when I gave birth to my daughter in 2021, cacao was fully integrated into my life, and I loved it. Here, my relationship with cacao developed in a new way.

I felt a huge longing to be held as a mother to a child who had countless awakenings at night. Regardless of your child's nature and how it feels to be in the mother role, I believe we all need external care to simultaneously receive the nourishment we give so much of to our children.

When you yourself are depleted, overwhelmed, tired, and longing for nourishment – perhaps even without being able to feel it – then Mama Cacao is a small pocket in the universe where you can settle in comfortably and receive. Ask and you will receive.

Working with cacao

Working with cacao requires humility and love. It perhaps culminates in respect when we invite these two elements in. To ask for permission, for consent to receive the medicine. To honor the connection by asking, by sharing nourishment from your physical space in the form of a cup of cacao. There are no rules in this, but I still feel it is a rule – without being rigid. A guiding principle, an anchor, which you can also enjoy.

Cacao's journey and the call to many

I think it's important to mention that cacao is also nourished by being allowed. Allowed to share its nourishment with the children of Earth – you and me.

It's probably no coincidence that cacao's journey began in South America and has spread to Europe, North America, and other parts of the world, where cacao is not just considered candy, but remembered and honored as plant medicine with a spirit.

Some believe it is exploitation to bring cacao here, away from its indigenous people. But I feel that it is exactly as it should be. That cacao itself has wished to spread its medicine to more. It has especially exploded in our part of the world in the last five years.

Why is Mama Cacao calling to more?

Our world faces many challenges. Never have we been sicker, more stressed, and more affected by poorer food quality, electronics, the internet, radiation, and medical systems that dominate our health choices. I am not against all of this – science has also saved lives – but I believe we have a harder time feeling ourselves due to external and internal disturbances.

So doesn't it make sense that Mama Cacao is calling to more and more people? To feel the longing of our hearts, truth, and connection to each other? To remind us of what truly matters – and help us act on it?

Invite Mama Cacao into your moment.

Otherwise, you can add rose water, vanilla powder, flower pollen, for example. These are all ingredients you can find in the shop - known for their feminine strength, gentleness, and potent energies.

  • Pour the first sip into a cup for Mama Cacao.

  • The rest of your cacao is for you.

  • Take a moment to dedicate your cup of cacao to The Guardian - Mama Cacao. You can simply dedicate it, or you can take a moment to ask for permission to invite that part of the cacao in. Honor what Mama Cacao has always done for you. Or whatever comes to mind.

  • Take your cup of cacao - what symbol comes to you when you think of Mama Cacao? Draw this above your cup of cacao. So when you start drinking your cup of cacao, you are drinking your own intention.

  • What is your intention? Is it to meet Mama Cacao? Is it to see what this part nurtures in you? Is it to see what Mama Cacao has nourished in you? Set your intention, like a conversation between you and Mama Cacao.

  • Let yourself be guided. Enjoy every sip as if it were the nourishment from your own mother.

  • Rest. Digest. Let yourself be enchanted and observe what comes to you.
