Can I drink ceremonial cacao while pregnant? 🤰
These are the questions I've been asked so often - and for good reason, I think.
Because I believe it signifies a calling to be supported through pregnancy, birth, and in motherhood's nurturing of you as a human being. So that you can then pass this on to your child/children 🤎
But the internet is flooded with answers. Which often contradict each other.
Therefore, I have created this blog post and a podcast episode with answers to these questions.
Always remember, if you are in doubt about drinking ceremonial cacao during your pregnancy, birth, or while breastfeeding, consult your doctor about it.
I am not trying to create fear, but because it feels ethically good to communicate out of respect for our individual bodies.
The episode largely focuses on what the historical use by the Maya people, as well as the medicine men and women who still today consider and use cacao to nourish women in this beautiful phase of their lives.
In the episode, I also cover:
- What is the correct dose of ceremonial cacao for pregnant and breastfeeding women (a rule of thumb to follow)
- How cacao has historically assisted women through pregnancies, birth, and the time after
- How Ixcacao is a beautiful support during this time when you might feel more sensitive and open
- ...Which opened up a bit of a love letter to Ixcacao when I started talking about it <3 Because my own story with 2 births has been rich in experience and a journey that has opened up my bodily memory. It was a wonderful embrace to have cacao in my life during my 2nd pregnancy
May you enjoy this episode 🤎
Let yourself be seduced by the calling you might feel to have cacao in your life during this transition. Yes, whether you are a first-time mother or not, it is a special journey to be on when carrying your child.
Yes, you can definitely drink ceremonial cacao, both when pregnant, when breastfeeding, and even during your birth.
Use half dose
The most important thing when drinking ceremonial cacao as a pregnant or breastfeeding woman is to simply use half the dose, and feel what feels good for your body.
Ceremonial cacao was fantastic during my own pregnancy
I myself have drunk cacao before, during and after my pregnancy with my daughter.
And I have felt great support during pregnancy and in my motherhood for stronger intuition, love, awareness and a calmer being.
In many places in the world, the cacao bean was considered sacred
In earlier times, the sacred cacao bean was also associated with Xochiquetzal, an Aztec goddess who stood for;
Fertility, love, beauty, births, feminine sexual power as well as female crafts and practices.
Used during birth
In addition, cacao beans were consumed by exhausted Mayan women during long births to strengthen the body and support the birth.
Do you feel the call from mama cacao, during your pregnancy or perhaps your upcoming birth?
Then you can definitely invite her along in this beautiful and transformative time.
Always remember to consult your doctor if you are in the slightest doubt, and feel what feels good and right for you.
