Confusion regarding caffeine content in ceremonial cacao?
I'm experiencing a lot of confusion about whether ceremonial cacao has a high caffeine content or not?
So here's my perhaps slightly nerdy answer 🤓
There is almost no caffeine present in ceremonial cacao at all.
And the stimulant we encounter in ceremonial cacao is Caffeine's family member: Theobromine.
These two active alkaloids, caffeine and theobromine, are only similar in structure and have very different origins and effects on the body.
Although Theobromine stimulates circulation, it does not energize the nervous system in the same way that caffeine does.
Theobromine, on the other hand, helps to:
• Relax muscles
• Boost mood
• Act as a vasodilator (increases the flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and major organs)
• Stimulate the heart
• Act as a diuretic and is a wonderful aid for detox.
The latter is also one of the reasons why it is so important to drink plenty of water during and after consuming cacao.
