The Story Behind Ceremonial Cacao (Part 2)

Love, Births, and Sexual Power

Knowledge of how to prepare the sacred cacao elixir – a drink believed to open the mind, strengthen the body, and impart wisdom – was often passed down as divine instructions exclusively to women.

This practice underscores the deep connection between cacao and feminine power, which was central to early Mesoamerican cultures.

The sacred cacao bean was associated with Xochiquetzal, the Aztec goddess of love, fertility, beauty, childbirth, feminine sexuality, and women's crafts and ritual practices.

She was the protector of the feminine, and it was through this connection that cacao became a channel for understanding and strengthening female energy.

Cacao – a Privilege for Royalty

In Olmec, Aztec, and Mayan societies, the consumption of cacao elixir was not for everyone. It was a privilege for royalty, nobility, and the spiritually sanctified, likely reflecting both its rarity and its spiritual power.

Before cacao became a cultivated crop and more accessible, it was a precious and almost magical resource, consumed only under special circumstances.

This exclusive consumption partially continued until the Spanish arrival in Mesoamerica, where cacao was brought to Europe and eventually spread to the rest of the world.

However, its spiritual significance gradually became more obscured, and the drink eventually transformed into a sweet and popular indulgence rather than a sacred ritual.

The Traditional Elixir

Originally, the cacao drink, Xocoatl, was far from the sweet, creamy hot chocolate we know today. It was bitter, spicy, and full of powerful flavors, often created with a specific intention, depending on who was to drink it and what effect was desired.

A traditional recipe might include:

  • Roasted corn flour

  • Chili

  • Vanilla

  • Cinnamon

  • Salt

  • Water

The drink was frothed by pouring it from one container to another until a foam formed on top. This foam was considered to carry the spirit of the cacao plant, and it was believed to help the medicinal and divine properties manifest in the one who drank the cacao.

Spiritual Rituals and Celebrations

Many historians and anthropologists believe that cacao was sometimes mixed with other plants with psychedelic properties, creating a potent blend that could enhance visionary experiences.

The combination of cacao's natural alkaloids and the ritualistic elements may explain the deeply spiritual and transformative experiences described in early Mesoamerican cultures – experiences that still inspire ceremonial practices today.

Cacao was considered divine ambrosia, a spiritual elixir, a medicinal healer, and a tool in rituals and celebrations that could:

  • Open the mind to wisdom and intuition

  • Strengthen the body and energy

  • Create connection between the feminine and the spiritual

  • Enhance rituals around love, birth, and personal transformation

Cacao as a Channel for Feminine Power

For women in the earliest civilizations, cacao was not merely a drink but a form of empowerment.

It was used during transitions, births, initiation rituals, and healing. It could strengthen sexual energy, creativity, and intuition, and was considered a direct connection to the divine – a way to connect with the energy of the universe through the body.

Drinking cacao was thus not just a physical intake; it was a sacred act that strengthened the relationship with the feminine, with nature, and with the spiritual forces that society attributed to love, fertility, and life-renewing energy.

From Past to Present

Today, we can work with ceremonial cacao in ways that honor this deep history. By understanding its original purpose, taste, and spiritual significance, we connect with thousands of years of practice and wisdom.

Each cup becomes a small ritual, an invitation to open the heart, strengthen the body, and connect with both our inner power and the feminine.

The magic of cacao lives on in the ceremonies and practices we create today – giving us the opportunity to connect with something greater than ourselves, something that has always been sacred.

Would you rather listen than read?

I have also created a podcast episode where you can listen to part of the history of cacao's roots.

Hear how cacao has been used by indigenous people from South America dating back 2000 years BC until the Spanish voyages of discovery almost 500 years ago.

So this episode is a partial reading and inputs from me as I speak.

However, it is my own material that I am reading from, which has been developed over several years through various Cacao Trainings from different facilitators such as Cacao Mama, Gavin (cannot remember his last name, but UK based), Soul Lift Cacao among others.

As well as a lot of self-study, because it makes so much sense to connect to the roots of cacao 🤎
