5 essential oils to help you get through winter
Winter Energy – Essential Oils for Colds, Winter Sluggishness, Grounding & Uplifting Energies
Winter is a special time.
A time when nature retreats, when the pace naturally slows down, and when we – if we listen – are invited to do the same.
Yet, we often live as if our bodies should function the same way all year round. This can create internal tension, fatigue, and a feeling of being "behind," when in reality, energy is simply following the rhythm of the seasons.
For me, winter isn't about pushing myself harder, but about gently supporting myself and preparing for the year ahead. And here, you can use essential oils as a sensory and natural way to create balance, calm, and presence in everyday life.
Here I share five of the most popular doTERRA oils you can use during the winter months and why they are good for these specific areas.
1. Cheer
When the winter darkness can be felt
There are periods in winter when light is scarce, days are short, and one's mood can feel heavier. Essential oils can never replace extra vitamin D, natural light, or medication, if seasonal depression is a companion for you in winter.
But here you have the opportunity to invite nature in to nourish you and awaken your inner joy.
Cheer is blended to create a feeling of lightness, optimism, and emotional upliftment. Its warm, soft citrus scent is experienced by many as illuminating and heart-opening – almost like a little ray of sunshine in the middle of winter.
Choose Cheer because it:
– supports feelings of joy and lightness
– helps when the mind feels heavy or dull
– invites more light and warmth into everyday life
You can use the pure oil in a diffuser. You can find the Cheer oil here.
You can also use the Roller version on your wrists or chest. You can find the Cheer Touch Roller here.
2. Adaptiv
When energy is low, but the body shouldn't be pushed
Winter fatigue is natural. It's the body's way of saying: "slow down."
Nevertheless, we may need a little support to find the balance between rest and everyday life.
Because we live in a modern age where the same effort is usually expected regardless of the season. Our internal menstrual cycle or our external season.
Here I choose Adaptiv (also available as Adaptiv Touch Roller), because it is created to support feelings of inner peace, surplus energy, and emotional balance – without being stimulating in an artificial way.
Adaptiv is not a "kickstarter," but rather an oil that:
– helps the nervous system find calm
– supports mental clarity
– can provide gentle, stable energy
You can use it in a diffuser in the morning or midday. Especially if you feel tired but still want to be present with those around you.
This is one of my absolute favorite oils, so it's also just for pampering if you love fresh orange, calming lavender, earthy Copaiba, and invigorating rosemary.
3. Air
For winter's heavy air and seasonal changes
When the cold arrives, the air changes. We spend more time indoors, and many experience heavy breathing, colds, or respiratory discomfort during illness.
Here, Air is one of the oils you can diffuse when you want to support your immune system and clear your nasal passages when you have a cold.
It is formulated to:
– support a feeling of free and easy breathing
– cleanse and freshen the air
– create a sense of clarity and openness
I use it in a diffuser or diluted on my chest and back – especially during periods when my body feels more vulnerable to seasonal changes.
You can also get it as an Air Touch Roller for direct application on skin or for on-the-go use.
4. Vetiver
When I need to ground myself
Winter calls for grounding. To be more in the body, more at home, more slow.
For some, it's not that easy. But grounding can also be a support if you are more affected during this time and feel overwhelmed when you finally get home.
Then the oil can be a support to land after the day's impressions.
Here, Vetiver is one of my absolute favorites.
It has a deep, grounding, and almost meditative scent that:
– supports feelings of safety and calm
– helps to mentally settle
– is fantastic if thoughts are racing, or the body feels restless
I use it especially in the evening. Especially for my son if he feels restless in his body. Then Vetiver - in a carrier oil - will be really lovely for grounding.
You can also use it during your quiet moments with cacao, where you want to feel yourself more clearly and slow down.
5. Lavender
When the nervous system needs to calm down
Lavender is a classic – and for good reason.
It is known for its:
– calming properties
– ability to create peace in both body and mind
– support for relaxation and sleep
During the winter months, I use lavender as part of my evening routine – either in a diffuser or diluted on my neck and shoulders.
It is also available as Lavender Touch for direct use on the body or for on-the-go.
In fact, I use it diligently all year round, as I have always had a special relationship with lavender.
It helps me soften my energetic heart and find a gentler rhythm.
A gentle reminder
For me, using oils isn't about "fixing" something.
But about supporting the body, senses, and nervous system, so we can better follow the natural movement of the seasons.
Winter doesn't invite us to perform, but to listen inwards, feel the year, and nurture what is close.
And sometimes a scent can be enough to remind us of just that 🤎
